It’s November, and that means it’s time to start planning your Thanksgiving. Whether you’re serving a huge turkey, a vegetarian casserole, or a small pizza, your appliances are sure to be a big part of the day.

Do a test run with your appliances before the big day. Test out your oven, stove/cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, icemaker, washer, and dryer at least a week before a gathering at your home. This gives you enough time to schedule an appliance repair if needed.
Do NOT put bones, eggshells, or grease in your garbage disposal. These can clog or even ruin your disposal. When in doubt, THROW IT OUT, using the trash, not the disposal.
Don’t use the self-clean feature of your oven the day before Thanksgiving. Heating elements and other oven parts often fail after a self-cleaning cycle is run. This is not the best thing to happen right before the holiday!
Free up space in your refrigerator. If your fridge is filled with your Thanksgiving day ingredients, make sure you leave enough room for the door to close. An overflowing refrigerator can keep the door from closing properly, so your food will not stay cool.
Don’t get locked out of your oven. Make sure the lock on your oven door is functioning properly. Nothing is worse on Thanksgiving than an oven full of food you can’t get to.
If your dishwasher isn’t working properly right now, it won’t work properly on Thanksgiving. If you think your drain might be clogged, look for the culprits like bones, cellophane and broken glass. If you think your dishwasher is on its last leg, don’t wait until it is too late; get it repaired today!
If it leaks, fix it. No one wants to eat a rancid turkey, so make sure your freezer is keeping your holiday foods frozen. The fridge needs to be dry and cold as well. If your icemaker is leaking, it needs repairing; sending a family member out to get ice on Thanksgiving will not make for a pleasant meal.
Be an attentive chef. Unattended cooking leads to oven and stovetop fires. Always keep a lid handy to smother flames. Should a fire occur in the oven, turn it off and keep the door closed. Keep anything that can catch fire, like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, or towels away from your cooking surfaces. If you’re not good at multi-tasking, ask someone to help you keep track of what’s cooking. Keep people out of the kitchen, and enjoy their company at the table.
Be sure your washer and dryer are functioning properly. This is especially true if you’re having houseguests. Nobody wants to run to the laundromat with used towels, dirty clothes, or wet laundry.
