Show your appliances some love with a good cleaning

Your kitchen appliances often work extra-hard this time of year, cooking and baking and washing for days on end. How ‘bout showing them a little love? They will perform better, smell nicer and last longer if they’re clean!

Your Refrigerator

Pull out the refrigerator and clean up whatever you find underneath and to the sides. Then, vacuum the refrigerator coils behind or beneath your fridge, which helps the motor run better.

Check door gaskets carefully, and replace if loose or torn. A tighter seal will help save energy and money. You’ll find replacement part numbers in your owner’s manual, and find new gaskets at home improvement centers or online. Each month, wipe gaskets down with warm, soapy water; rinse and dry.

A little soapy water or a 50-50 solution of water and white vinegar will clean and shine the inside and outside of your fridge. Wipe down shelves, doors and crispers weekly, or whenever you spot a spill.

Your Oven

Most ovens have self-cleaning options, so let the oven do the hard work for you! For those spots that the self-clean option doesn’t reach, such as door hinges and frames, just wipe with vinegar and soapy water.

Baked-on grime comes off with a little baking soda on a sponge, or a spritz of commercial oven cleaner. (Make sure you open a window before your spray, so you don’t breathe the fumes!) Make a habit of wiping spills quickly after using the oven, and you may never have to scrub it again.

Your stovetop

Fill your sink with hot, soapy water; soak burners, knobs, and fan filters for a couple of hours; then scrub. Repeat if necessary. You can also throw most of these parts in the dishwasher for a good cleaning. While the exhaust fan is off, wipe down the blades and enclosure with a stiff vinegar and soapy water solution.

Replace stained metal drip plates if they’re beyond the help of steel wool.

Vacuum crumbs that have fallen into the cracks between the stovetop and counter with the sofa attachment on your vacuum. Pull the unit away from the wall a few times a year to wash underneath it, being careful not to scratch the floor when you do so.

Your Dishwasher

You’d think you wouldn’t need to clean your dishwasher because it cleans itself every time you use it! But you should check the drain in the bottom of the machine frequently for bits of food, nutshells, broken glass and other debris, and wipe the gaskets around the door to ensure a tight seal.

Once a month, clean and deodorize your dishwasher by placing a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack and running it, empty, for a full cycle.

Your Microwave

The best way to remove baked-on food is to fill a microwave-safe container with water, microwave it until the water boils, and let it sit for a few minutes while steam loosens any gunk. After that, just wipe clean.
